No Prouder Moment

As a father, there are many moments when you beam with pride over your child's accomplishments.  Being that my child is only a year old, I still have many more moments to look forward to (fingers crossed, she'll be an overachiever so my wife and I can retire early!).  I wanted to share with you some of the best moments of our first year with our daughter, and let you in on a little secret.

We have seen her go from bottles to people food.  She has taken her first steps. She can climb a flight of stairs. She ate a stinkbug. She can pull herself up to her feet and pull all of the books off of her bookshelf.  She once stuffed about 40 Cheerios in her mouth at once (I wasn't even mad!  That's impressive.). Now she is forming words and making animal sounds based on pictures.  All of this stuff is amazing, and it makes you so proud to be a dad.  You can look at her and watch the learning happening before your very eyes.  She is a sponge, and all of your efforts to educate and teach will hopefully pay dividends when she goes to school and encounters the real world.  But there is one moment that surpasses all of these, and leaves a father beaming with pride.

There is a moment that makes you realize that your child is totally normal, and will probably be okay in life, and it has nothing to do with motor skills or vocabulary abilities.  There is a moment when you look into your daughter's eyes, and she looks right back at you and smiles and laughs, but this time it's different than before.  There is a moment when you realize that she has a sense of humor, and she will probably be able to laugh off the crap that the world will throw her way and be a well-balanced individual. This moment, this pivotal moment, when you fart and your child laughs at it for the first time is so magical, and in that moment, you are the proudest father.  And, if your child decides to give you an extra special blessing, like mine did, she will fart back at you and laugh all the more!  This one's going in the baby book.
