You'd Think I'd Like My Odds

The first surf song to reach number one on the Billboard Top 100 in 1963 was Jan & Dean's "Surf City."  I know what you're thinking, "Wasn't that the Beach Boys?"  Nope.  It was co-written by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, but he gave it to Jan & Dean who also had hits with "Drag City," "Dead Man's Curve," and their cover of the Beach Boys' "Little Old Lady From Pasadena."  The magical line from "Surf City" is "two girls for every boy" (a keen observation on a young man's odds of getting lucky in this town).  So, you would think that since I was heading to Philadelphia tomorrow to sit in a hotel with 200 women, I'd like my odds.  Well, it's not that kind of party (and I'm really not that kind of guy anyway).

On Saturday, I will be attending my first blog convention - Bloggy Bootcamp Philly.  I have some idea of what to expect, but I want to keep an open mind and do a lot of listening.  My entire purpose for attending this convention is to make some connections so that I can perhaps be invited to participate as a speaker in the future.  I would love to one day be invited to talk to moms about involved fatherhood and how to encourage their partners to embrace that lifestyle.  So, I'm going to get out there and start rubbing elbows with the people on the convention circuit.

All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt

I'm sure they will be selling all sorts of merchandise at this event, but I plan on wearing my own home-made shirt.  On the front it says, "Don't Call Me Mr. Mom" and on the back it has my web address.  The last thing I want is 200 women trying to start a conversation with me by asking my how I like being a "Mr. Mom."  I figure I'll tell everyone up front, that way, I can say you were warned before I punch you in the throat (of course, I'm joking... I would never hit a girl).

Wanna Go To Surf City With Me?

Can't make it to Philly?  I will be tweeting live from the event using the hash tag #BBCPhilly.  I plan to keep you informed of the best takeaways from the sessions I attend, plus update you with any silliness that I observe while at this estrogen infused convention.  At least I know I won't be the only guy in attendance.  Apparently, Frequent Flyer Father is going to be there, so it will be nice to meet him in person.

Until we meet again next week, enjoy this wonderful video of Jan & Dean singing their hit "Surf City" from the front seat of their '34 Woody.  See ya Tuesday, unless some corporation does something stupid in the name of dad before then.
